FOREWORD

BY PROFESSOR ALAN WHITESIDE

  • Swaziland has the dubious distinction of having the highest HIV prevalence in the world.
  • For more details see the UNAIDS website and in particular their country page - UNAIDS SWD
  •  I have been trying to understand why this is the case and have, with colleagues written two reports on this. These can be accessed on our website and the most recent one is at - 2007 Report
  • The response to the epidemic in Swaziland is being led by the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS and they have an excellent website. NERCHA SWD
  • There is no doubt in my mind that the epidemic is one of the most serious challenges faced by Swaziland and it is having an impact in the education sector. However I believe the country is facing the challenge and I am cautiously optimistic, but Swazi society will be transformed.
